Ainessandil

TITLE:
Istion, Glirion, Herunnur Terlu nos Maglor (Scholar and Poet, Acting Steward of House Maglor)

DESCRIPTION:
You see an elf, perhaps relatively young. His eyes are deep blue-black, reflecting more wisdom than his youthful appearance suggests. His thin, chiselled face is topped by unkempt dusty-blond hair. All in grey is he clothed, even to his smooth, soft boots. A grey cloak covers all, though here and there small bulges protrude from it.

PERSONA:
Ainessandil was born some 500 years ago, about the time that Celebrian sailed West. He was raised by Lingolas and Elengal, thus effectively the brother of Curucam. Rebellious and rather obnoxious as a child, he left the Valley unannounced when he was barely 200 years of age, and roamed Eriador and Wilderness for some 300 years, learning all he could of both elven and non-elven languages and cultures. For he always delighted in languages, and Quenya foremost, the language of his thought, and in his rebellious days, often also of his speech. Ever were the languages of the Quendi his first love, their origins, histories, and interrelationships. But he studied every other language he could learn of, and the culture of it also, because he came to believe that in the age he was born to, understanding of and postive interaction with the non-elven races of Endor were necessary to counter the ever more powerful presence of the Evil based in Mordor.

In 3011 Ainessandil returned to Imladris, with the worst of his immaturity cleansed, and quickly became active, almost prominent, in the Istfariath. He also joined the Guild of Singers, for he loved music and song. He was unremarkable as a composer or singer, but his love for the lyre Lanaewen had crafted for him was well-known. His political views, and perhaps the true seed of his younger rebelliousness, became most widely known in the Valley when he pledged himself to Hiril Lethelindriel and her divisive house, Nos Maglor. When the Hiril left the Valley for an extended period, she even named him Temporary Steward of the House, an appointment which Hir Elrond accepted.

Ainessandil's stay in the Herdir's haven was brief, however, for he fell in love with the fair maid Mirwen. Soon after their betrothal, she left on a mysterious mission, and when no word was heard of her for several years, the Isthir and Glirion and Herunner Terlu renounced his titles and duties, departing Imladris in her search a mere nine years after his arrival. Eleven years later, having again wandered much of Eriador and Wilderland, though to much different purpose, he returned to Rivendell, no wiser in the matter of his betrothed but perhaps with a better understanding of himself. At first he was most private upon his return, devoted only to the books of the Library and the quiet haunts of the Valley. Gradually he has learned to hide whatever sorrows affect his heart, and has become more active in the social, intellectual, and political life of the Last Homely House.

HISTORY:
Brief version:

Ainessandil was born in Imladris in TA 2508. The adopted brother of Curucam, he did not get along well with many in Imladris, including his family. He left Imladris when some 50 years old, and wandered much of Endor over the following 300 years. Thereafter, he returned to Imladris to take his place in the community, active especially in the Istfariath and the Singers Guild. He was betrothed to Mirwen of Amon Thrandruil a relatively short while after his return to Imladris, but soon thereafter she had to leave, and has not been heard of since. After a time, in the prolonged absence of Hiril Lethelindriel, he was appointed Acting Steward of the small and controversial Nos Maglor. Eventually, Ainessandil left Imladris again to seek Mirwen, without success. Ten years later he returned to Imladris and gradually returned to full participation in the social and political life of the Valley.

Ainessandil's overweening interest is in the languages of Endor, including non-elven languages. He also writes songs and plays the lyre, while trying to keep abreast of events outside of Imladris as much as possible. He is no warrior, and what he knows of bow and staff he has picked up mostly through experimentation as a means to survival in his travels.
