The Ents were given the guardianship of the trees and other floral life forms by the Vala Yavanna. They look outwardly similar to trees, and are about 14 feet tall, but have the gifts of speech and movement. They have extremely long lifespans and are extremely tough and strong. In the Elder Days, they were to be found in both sexes, male and female, the female of the species being called Entwives. The Entwives disappeared before the end of the Second Age, and today only the male Ents are known to exist in Middle Earth. They are most commonly found in Fangorn forest and speak a very slow and complex language of their own, with some elvish influence because it was the elves who first introduced them to the concept of speech. They can speak elvish, or Westron, if necessary. Ents are very protective of the forest and are not commonly seen because the concerns of the world outside the forest are of no interest to them. There are very few of them left anyway, and their existence is considered legendary by most other peoples of Middle Earth. Some trees under the care of ents for a long time can start to become aware themselves, and able to move. These are called Huorns.
