This is the Imladris OOC room. It is large and open, with large, comfortable
chairs and couches all around, arranged in circles. Murals of favorite scenes
>from LOTR are painted on much of the bare wall space, and lots of OOC graffiti
is scribbled on the remaining space.
Newbies: don't forget to do these things: 1) type +imnews to access our online
help system; 2) .skim the corkboard and .read the messages there by typing .read
<message number> ... they'll help you a lot. 3) type look librarian, then follow
the directions for detailed background info. All this information can also be

Elrond grins. OK, let's start. Before we discuss any specifics, are there any
issues or concerns that people have that need to be aired?

Arainafin says, "Something that is never mentioned enough. Those who do the work
of the local admins can always use recognition and additional thanks and support.
Having 12 years of experience on El, I can honestly state that the admin efforts
and attentiveness I have seen in the past three weeks here surpass all others I
have seen to date. You guys are doing really wonderfully."
Penniavas beams. Definitely. I dont do much but the others are great in what
they do, Specially Elrond and those who take in my countless questions on Elvish
Kiddies
Arainafin says, "I mean this. I've seen it take 2 months to get a simple reply
to an inquiry"
Candamon says, "To keep it short, I'll just whole-heartedly ditto."

Curanolas dittoes wholeheartedly...as well...took the words right out of my
fingers, jackal.
Elrond grins. You guys have been great. :) This whole past several weeks has
been about letting our players play. :) And you have! :)

Elrond chuckles. Cheering is all well and good, but unless we plan a really cool
set of fun things to do that will carry us past the end of the school year for
our college and high school types and keep us rolling and revving.

the same thing."

Elrond says, "Can you give me an RP Tuesday you want to do on May 22nd, if
that's doable? So we start extending our schedule? :)"

Elrond says, "which idea was that exactly?"
Penniavas is working on a few plot ideas too... nto sure when, and I forget the
specifics x.x
Curanolas says, "Someone sings a line or two, then another elfie jumps in with
his/her line or two, then another elfie jumps in with his/her line or two, etc.
Until someone ends the song...or no lines can be thought of for whatever the
last line was."
Elrond says, "OK, give us a title for it and a time, and one of us will put it
on the MOTD"
Elrond says, "and thanks!"
Candamon says, "I've probably forgotten, but is there a board or other forum
that regularly carries details about the upcoming events shown on the +motd?
Some things are obvious but some (like 'Winter Song for the Trees,' for example)
might not be so much."

Elrond says, "So a general comment ... I wanna get the RP Tuesdays laid out well
into the future, but they're only for a skeleton. It's the spontaneous stuff and
the FOLLOWUP to the spontaneous stuff that makes for a living culture."
Arainafin says, "Err, RP Tuesdays?"
Penniavas nodnods
Penniavas can't make all tuesdays, so..
Penniavas says, "I can help try to keep things spontaneous..."
Elrond says, "and EVERYONE can and should schedule events. Don't wait for
someone with more "ooc authority" ... I've been making sure that there's a
scheduled event every tuesday n ight"

Elrond says, "Not just them, Tirl ... all preannounced events go there"
Elrond says, "We'll get a time for Cura's when she checks her schedule. One of
the LAs, pencil it into MOTD without a time for now?"

Elrond says, "and PEnni ... PLEASE give us some other times with scheduled
events. Scheduled events means that people log on for that, and stay to do their
own more spontaneous stuff"

Arainafin says, "My apologies if I am sounding redundant of belittling here. I
am simply wondering how well versed people are in introducing an event, be it a
single scene scenario or an extended plot, and in inciting interest in it."
Penniavas normally invites people over, sets the scene with an @emit and nudges
events in the right directoin.
Arainafin says, "The greatest most wonderful idea can fall flat on it's face if
not presented well."
Elrond says, "well, we've been trying to show people how, and many know a lot,
but there are also newer players who need support ..."
Sidhel needs the support of his bed now. Night, elves!

Arainafin says, "Well, a billion dollars a year in the US alone is spent on
advertising for this very reason"
Elrond says, "It's like one thing I've discovered from this whole highly active
situation is that a lot of people don't know things I take for granted. So it
neve rhurts to explain things."
Elrond says, "But before we go off into a long thing about how to advertise,
there's another thing I'd like to mention ..."
Candamon says, "What I've seen since I've been back, as far as events and one-
off scenes has been good - I honestly don't see problems there, just
opportunities for growth. Long-term plots and follow-up is harder, and that may
need more OOC nudging."
Penniavas nods.
Arainafin says, "Long term plots are a huge pain in the ***"
Candamon says, "Subject-verb agreement are also harder," and facepalms.
Arainafin says, "Or clique promotion devices"
Elrond says, "Character development. When I was playing Rhunedhel in the early
years I had a definite trajectory he was slowly developing along. He started
essentially as a refugee full of grief, and over time, he became a leader, dealt
with the grief, moved back toward wholeness ... and part of that was his writing
his epics, which expressed both the grief and the value of that for which he
grieved. Now, that wasn't a long term plot, in Arainafin's sense. It was just a
natural sequence, an unfolding of the story."
Elrond says, "That's what I'd like everyone to be able to achieve with their
characters. For the characters to have an unfolding, a story, that is satisfying
to you as their player, and to the people interacting with them."

a guest of Saruman
Elrond laughs. I was still a newbie then, if you mean what I think you do.
Elrond says, "and folks, if you're no set nospoof, that was Ara"
Arainafin says, "But you played it brilliantly!"
Elrond grins.
Elrond says, "anyway ... it's following up on things in ways that make the
character unfold, that will take things somewhere. And in fact, so far, PEnny's
done that most of anyone here, or else we've done it to him. I'm not sure
which!"
Arainafin says, "Char evolvement?"
Penniavas blinkblinks. Really?
Tirloth nods.
Elrond says, "yah. You've been in the thick of things, and your character's been
forced to deal with things that you probably didn't expect to deal with at the
start. That makes the character change ... and can be great fun, if we keep a
flexible attitude."
Penniavas nods. :) I admit I'm still not sure about some parts but it has been
fun.
Arainafin says, "I've already seen it. The problem is, after a while you begin
to outgrow your history. Char's evolve and change much more rapidly than theme
evolvement accepts"
Elrond says, "each character bouncing off of the others in IC ways ... that is
what makes MUSHing brilliant. Not big set piece TPs, though TPs can be great fun
and very useful. And the key is to play the characters in ways that don't push
too hard against theme limits. Though to be blunt, I'm not going to die if we
have to scramble to keep some of our characters' RPs from brushing up against
thematic limits. The fun RP is often in the grey areas, and the key is to
understand the living and breathing spirit of Tolkien's works and apply them,
rather than to draw hard boundaries."
Elrond says, "So what I'd like to see is each player taking responsibility for
interactiosn their character is key in, and making sure followups happen, where
the sense that what you do ICly affects your next RPs ... is really there. :) ...
and with that said, lemme ask, what has happened recently that needs that kind
of followup?"
Candamon says, "Well, I have wanted to follow up on Candamon's accidentally
shooting Penniavas, but there are some things I'm unsure of."
You say, "There's the hunt. I'm not sure how Forodren reacted, though."
Penniavas hmms. we have to finish the Missing Towels case, as well, I never DID
get to find that surprise in the fireplace, but we need Bilbo for that again. I
couldn't make his birthday. There's also... I forget who, but someone was going
to take Penny to find flowers in the wild, as well as Fali had offered to have
the Dwarven stonemasters along fix the pathway out of the valley (Did that mail
EVER get read?)...

effected,...."
You say, "Bell and Thingol statue."
Ermithren says, "The bell, the towels, the paintings. I can't think of things
Gwar did that need something. Ringram."

Penniavas says, "IT was already RPed him coming out. Oh! he found another
painting too"
Ermithren says, "Dorfs and Troll."
Ermithren says, "Beo. Lots of stuff :)"
Penniavas says, "Annun and Ilfwen could use a wedding feast perhaps."
Elrond says, "OK. What we need is people taking the initiative to make sure that
each thread gets followed up on. Someone saying: I'll schedule scenes, I'll page
people, I'll talk to people. It's not all something an LA should do ... when you
do that, you keep the LAs informed, especially if it involves other cultures, in
which case PLEASE have an LA help, because that's a BEAR TRAP ... but if we get
n othing out of this meeting but people saying which threads they'll push and
push, we'll be in good shape. We'd put that in +imnews tp, but it's more organic
than TPs are usually understood as."
Penniavas can volunteer to ICly tell everyone and their dog about different
events, if people want to send me mails and say Penny found out.
Penniavas says, "Cause I'm not as easy to ignore as Arglind. ;P"
Elrond says, "that's COOL"
Penniavas wanted to ask about being related to ARglind at one point, heh.
Candamon says, "I'm not sure - and this I've wanted to ask as I thnk about
scenes - how others here feel about some fairly emotional playing. I mean,
please gods let me never again play Angsty Elf, but I've not been sure if its
alright to play Angry Elf, Accusatory Elf, or the like. How far do you feel
comfortable with disagreements in the valley, between individuals or between
houses, going?"
Elrond says, "And Ara pointed out something that's important, by page ... if
something makes you uncomfortable, forces your character in directions you
really don't want to go, and so on ... you can say no. Say I'm not comfortable,
let's find a different way to resolve this."
Elrond says, "or if it bores you, in particular"
Elrond says, "boring things can be allowed to quietly die!"
Arainafin says, "So how do we portray emotions and what is taboo?"
Penniavas doesnt mind disagreements, so long as I oocly know why. Penny may have
other opinions.
Elrond says, "It's a tricky business, and in part requires OOC mutual
understanding."

Elrond says, "and in part a shared sense of what the limits are."
Elrond says, "I have a pretty finely tuned sense of when an RP is going to go
over either thematic limits or interpersonal relational limits ... but not
always."
Elrond says, "especially when dealing with people I don't know well"
Ermithren says, "From personal experience, disagreement can be very stimulating.
Just make sure everyone knows it is IC, not OOC, and keep in mind that Elves
would be likely to handle it pretty formal. There is even something in the L&C
that states that a go-between would be likely to be used."
Arainafin says, "That is something that isn't RPed nearly enough"
Elrond says, "well ... a huge drag-out argument with no holds barred and no room
to save face, for instance, is dangerous both in theme sense and OOCly, since
people can start reacting to each other in an inflammatory way"
Elrond says, "I've occasionally been trapped into that."
Penniavas says, "L&C?"
Arainafin says, "Go betweens, and all the RP that can go with it, can be a rich
source of RP"
Elrond says, "Like Martion in Thranduil's throne room. Which was due to a clash
in theme understandings and philosophy of RP across cultures."
Elrond says, "I guess not everyone knows that story?"

Candamon says, "Though, if everything is done by go-betweens, that might be
limiting for some others. And, no, I don't."
Sulriel says, "L&C -- Laws & Customs of the Eldar"

Elrond says, "Martion was with the group, with a stop on the way with Beo ...
Brynjolf decided to come along. Imladhrim said OK ... but Thran's folk would
have final word. Thran's folk decided that Brynjolf's presence in AT lands, even
as guest of his guests, was cause to throw him in prison"
Arainafin says, "On that line, another issue one needs to keep in mind for
people who have been here for a while"
Elrond says, "Several Imladhrim were interceding with Thranduil, including
Glorfindel. Martion came in a bit late, just in time to have Thranduil basically
tell everyone to shut up, right when he was asking a chanc eto be heard."
Elrond says, "The background was a long series of RPs that made a real IC link
between Nos Fithurin and Brynjolf ... not quite elf-friend, but a sense of
mutual-guest-shipo and obligation."
Elrond says, "So Martion ... who in basic attitude thinks VERY low of men, found
himself staging a sit in in Thranduil's throne room on Brynolf's behalf."
Elrond says, "alas, the IC/OOC separation was not so clear, and there were hard
feelings"
Elrond says, "so a sense of when to step back, when to let things cool, both IC
and OOC, is important"
Ermithren says, "The first time I started a "fight" was with Gond. After my pose,
he FIRST paged with "You know what this means, are you OK with it," and so on.
We had great fun."
Arainafin says, "ONe problem I have experienced multiple times is you establish
a relationship with a BFC, only to have the BFC player change. THen you pose
something that is born of familiarity which the new player knows nothing about
and resents."
Elrond says, "OK, folks, I have to be AFK for about 20 minutes ... so ..."
Elrond says, "Elingail, will you take agenda-keeper position here and get the
following item moving ..."
Elrond says, "Get a list of who's going to follow up on which RP thread, to
update +imnews tp with?"

a single one-off scene with IC feelings or plans that have to be played on later
and that people OOCly *want* to play on later."

everyone comes away happy, then you're more likely to have even more fun in the

TP myself -- Until I just got Iccly charged with tracking down the culprits."
You say, "It's good to be aware of IC-OOC differences. That way, even if your
character and the other character are mad at each other, OOCly, you're still on
good terms."
Sulriel says, "It also means that even if you can't stand someone OOC, IC you
can still interact in a scene"

Candamon says, "Something I'm grateful for, because it means people will still
play with me. ;) Anyway, towels?"

Elingail says, "I have rather a fun idea for a scene to help wrap it up sometime
however which I will need a couple of helpers for if the towel thief could OCCLy
let me know who they are. :)"
Ermithren says, "We need someone to say: "I'll take the scene, I'll page, get
scenes going." So we really need one person each time, who will then get people
together or talk with LA."

Elingail I know that Penny borrowed some, what has been played however is that
some more have been disappearing since -- If someone wants to take point on that
and come up with an IC reason why they could have been borrowing towels that
would be great, or we can temp-alt someone in.

on it at all, if not I will wrap up the TP with some tale of a miscreant temp-
alt."

You say, "I believe three (correct me if I'm wrong) have been found so far."
Ermithren says, "Maybe we should not spoil the TPs, but just ask someone to look
into the matter. Any takers for that job?"
Elingail says, "Ok so we have the paintings turning up, so now we all need to be
on the look out for our mystery painter."
Penniavas says, "where are the three found paintings found?"
You say, "One near Fithurin, one in the Bell Tower. I'm not sure about the
third?"

Penniavas says, "dang, okay"

Ermithren says, "That's 4. But for me, only 1 ICly :)"
Elingail says, "So the paintings still seem to be turning up, but Iccly we have
no clue as to who the artist is...I'll put up that this TP is still rolling
along -- be on the lookout for elfs with messy hands :)"

You say, "It hasn't been going very far. We've RPed a shortage of tin, and were
debating whether to melt it down or find more tin to patch it."
Candamon says, "Think the dwarves might have some to trade?"
You say, "Possibly. I haven't RPed with them, but there's also a tin mine in...

Candamon says, "Oooh, road trip!"
Tirloth will have to consult Rhune on that.
Penniavas says, "I dont evenk now what brought the dwarves here. Icly my dwarf
alt has been telling people 'trade and to pick up a lost dwarf'"
Elingail says, "Sounds like aquiring some more tin could be fun."
Sulriel says, "Tin somehow doesn't seem a very Elvish metal..."
Tirloth nods. Rhune, when you pop unidle, do you know where the tin mines were
(mentioned in the RP in the library)?
Ermithren says, "IC reason: going home, were in the neighbourhood, etc. But we
could make use of the situation."
You say, "Brass, which was used extensively for bells, is an alloy of tin. :)"
Ermithren will look into the dorf matter. Also to spark some RP from our side,
Menelmen and such.
Elingail says, "All alive and kicking on that point, could you keep me updated
on that one Tirl? :)"
Candamon always knew Elrond had brass bells.

Elingail says, "Try getting Thenengel involved, I think hes your most active
smith on that front at the moment.""

in the copper. There is no 'brass' in a bell"

Penniavas says, "icy half-pipes made by otters in the winter, on riverbanks,
that they slide down onto the ice."
Penniavas says, "We could also probably build a toboggan/sled run on the slopes
of the valley."
Elingail says, "Some sledging and snow type activities could defintely be a lot
of fun.""
Penniavas says, "Reindeer sleighs."
Elingail says, "Perhaps we could do a whole winter festival this year? Lots of
outdoor type scenes?"
Ermithren says, "let's schedule Snow Fun and work on it? Penny?"

spring approaching -- Time flies ;)"

Elingail says, "Maybe we could combine the pair -- will check the old logs to
see if the BIE is based on a certain season or such."

Penniavas says, "BIE?"

Elingail says, "I think the Bereth is a festival we made up here on Elendor, so
it most likely wont be on there. :)"
Ermithren suddenly turns two dimensional and shrinks into a point, like an old
TV picture tube.

Candamon says, "Alright. I've been looking haphazzardly for some event to tie a
scene or scenes around where we could talk about history, tell stories of that
history.... I'll do more concerted looking after finals this week."
Elingail says, "On the bugs eating the herbs front, the bugs are now gone but
some of the herbs need replacing which might mean a gathering TP sometime soon,
when the snow clears.""

Ermithren says, "How much has Ringram been involved?"
Sulriel was teaching Penny a little about history
Ermithren says, "True, we have the lessons thing for Penny and Faigli."
Penniavas really wants to somehow tone down how much Penny is learning at a time.
I think all these classes will just make him more confused and sad.
Arainafin says, "How would you do that?"
Penniavas says, "Have those in charge of the lessons drop some would be my
suggestion. Leave some stuff to learn for later."
You say, "Penny could learn more through experience."
Elingail says, "With him apprenticing under Thenengel, I dont think thats a bad
idea." :)"
Penniavas says, "I'd prefer to drop healing, forestry and perhaps official
Barding, with some lessons in his spare time instead for the flute he has now."
Candamon says, "I don't know how much Ringram has been involved. I've asked a
couple whose PCs are in Nos Forodren and got the impression that things haven't
moved much beyond the +imnews TP and +imicnews posts."
Penniavas says, "He Icly spoke to Penny's father, and even he admitted it was a
little muich for his boy at this time."

Ermithren tentively suggests, that if you are planning a scene for, say,
tomorrow, I'd be willing to put it up on +motd. It doesn't have to be a big
event, I think. +motd might attract people to your scene. But in that way we
would depart from listing "events", in also listing, for example, "Meeting in
the Wine Cellar". Rhune?

out various things that happen/people can do. They also, once a week, post
'rumors of the week'. Ie, 'someone in the Hall today slipped and chipped a tooth
on a statue!' and if people want, they could 'claim' said rumors for their own.
A way to give people ideas of stuff to RP. Same with the event generator."
Elrond says, "well ... I'd rather by far use us as random event generators for
other players"

Thenengel says, "It is a good Idea, but takes away from the Organic nature of
rping with others I feel. I agree with Elrond, that we would be better suited
for making scenes, and sparking interest."

Penniavas says, "lots of things happen off-scren that I've RPed with penny. Its
the same way with the generators or rumors... Like when penny was stung by
hornets - that happened off screen. Same with the actual dissapearance of the
towels. Then I got into RP with these as 'recently happened events' and got
others to RP with me, or RPed the actual events that I got out with other
people."
Penniavas says, "That's how you'd use the things."
Elrond says, "those kinds of things are good. But I'd rather encourage players
to develop a how-to-do-that attitude in their own heads ..."
Penniavas says, "Cause the RP has to start with SOME idea, and sometimes people
need suggestoins on what ideas to start the RP with"
