VIII: Standards for Character Setup: Names

We expect Imladris characters to pick names that are real names in Sindarin elvish. Before you ever let a character get as far as writing descs and such things, make sure that they take care of choosing an elvish name.

This is one of the hardest things for many newbies. There is the translator page, http://www.elendor.net/translator.php, but they may have trouble working with it without help.

Always be willing to help them come up with names, even if you have to ask them what sort of meaning they want and do much of the translating on the translator page yourself.

Most elven names are meaningful. Pay attention to the meaning they pick. We don't really want any new elves with names that translate to meanings like Dread Vengeance or Evil Sorcerer. :) And we don't want them coming in with names from non-Tolkien sources like Raistlin or Conan.

If a player has a totally unthematic name, and refuses to change it, that, like refusing to take a thematic history, can be grounds for deculturing them in the last resort.

Also note that the dictionary underlying the translator page uses some spelling conventions different than we find in the Lord of the Rings proper. To get the correct feel, all K's should be changed to C's (they are always pronounced like the letter k anyway in Elvish) and any double or triple vowels should be reduced to a single vowel (the double and triple vowels correspond to accent marks in the Lord of the Rings.)
