XII Pet Peeves about Histories
As with descs, we have pet peeves about histories too. There are things that most newbies think up and imagine to be creative, when it's utterly cliched and often unthematic. Let's please nix histories involving things like the following. In some cases, we might allow them if the player writes it up exceptionally ably. But in general, while there are people who can make some of these things work, most of them are features.
All Alone In The World
--I'm an orphan. My parents were killed by orcs.
--My parents dropped me off in the care of relatives and vanished
--I don't know who I am. I have amnesia.
--I'm a foundling who was raised by humans
Been There, Done That
--I have traveled everywhere and seen everything
--My character is a well known hero
--Well, my parents were well-known heroes.
--and I am an expert swordsman and an expert healer, too!
Weirding Out
--I'm an elf, but I hate song (which is like: I'm a hobbit, but I hate food)
--Vengeance. I must have vengeance.
--I am being blackmailed by agents of Sauron
--I have this utter need to travel everywhere no matter how dangerous it is
--Actually, I suffer from mental illness
--Wait, scratch that, I'm just evil
Uh, Which Way to Dragonlance?
--I'm best buddies with hobbits and dwarves.
--I live to go on adventures, killing dragons, and defying Sauron at the gates of Mordor
--I do great magic. Fear me.
