VII. Standards for Character Setup: General Comments

The single most grueling part of character setup for Imladhrim players is getting their desc, history and persona written and approved.

Our standards are high. We expect corrections if they have obvious mechanical and grammatical errors in them. We do not accept them if they are unthematic, or reflect unthematic character concepts. And we try to encourage them to achieve real quality in the content.

This process is important, because it is the part of the process in which we communicate many of the things that we expect of players. It's when we try to work with them to fit them into the social structure of the Valley. We can't avoid making them do a lot of work, and we can't avoid frustration when a character just can't seem to get it right. But we can streamline it and make it as pleasant as possible, with an emphasis on the positive not the negative.

In particular, do your best to be pleasant and helpful with ESL players. A few typos that can be fixed later should not become a huge wall that will prevent us from welcoming them.

Remember, that the PLAYER is the author of their desc, history and persona. The character belongs to THEM. We are there to help them find a character that they will have fun playing, and who will also be fun to play with. And above all, we are there to help them fit their character to what's already going on in the Valley. It's always great to help them find other players they can coordinate with, to be family members or friends. And it's always best if you try to get them focused on something creative they can do with their characters. Often, a player will come up with something that just won't fly. Don't come across as tearing down their efforts. Praise what you can. Try to take what they have and get them to change emphasis so that it works.
